STANDARD METAL-ON-METAL TOTAL HIP REPLACEMENT *Moroni A, **Savarino L, *Cadossi M, **Greco M, **Baldini N, *Giannini S * Rizzoli Orthopaedic Institute, Bologna, Italy **Laboratory for Pathophysiology of Orthopaedic Implants, Rizzoli Orthopaedic Institute, Bologna, Italy [email protected] INTRODUCTION Modern metal-on-metal (MOM) hip resurfacing has been introduced as a less invasive method of joint reconstruction for young-active patients (1). Hip resurfacing advantages include: bone stock preservation, wider range of motion, better functional outcomes and lower rate of dislocation. However, considering the large diameter of the coupling components, there are concerns regarding the quantity of metal ion release. The aim of this study was firstly to quantify the production of metal ion release in patients with a MOM hip resurfacing prosthesis and to compare this result with a control group. Secondly, we wanted to compare metal ion release after hip resurfacing with metal ion release after MOM total hip replacement as investigated in a previous study (2).

Metal ion release from bearing wear and corrosion with 28 mm and large-diameter metal-on-metal bearing articulations: a follow-up study.
We have updated our previous randomised controlled trial comparing release of chromium (Cr) and cobalt (Co) ions and included levels of titanium (Ti) ions. We have compared the findings from 28 mm metal-on-metal total hip replacement, performed using titanium CLS/Spotorno femoral components and titanium AlloFit acetabular components with Metasul bearings, with Durom hip resurfacing using a Meta...
متن کاملMid-Term Review of ADEPT Metal-On-Metal Hip Prosthesis. Functional, Radiological and Metal Ion Analysis
Background: There is much interest regarding metal-on-metal implants in medical and general media. Much of this has been regarding failure of specific implant systems and metal ion toxicity. We present our early mid-term experience of the ADEPT metal-on-metal system which has both modular and non-modular hip options. Methods: Functional assessment, blood metal ion quantification, and radiograph...
متن کاملHip resurfacing versus metal-on-metal total hip arthroplasty - are metal ion levels different?
A systematic review and meta-analysis of trials comparing hip resurfacing to metal-on-metal total hip arthroplasty was conducted to determine if there is a difference in serum metal ion levels in patients receiving these implants. EMBASE and MEDLINE databases were searched from inception to December 2010 for all trials involving the use of these devices. Eligibility for inclusion in the review ...
متن کاملOngoing problems with metal-on-metal hip implants.
Major advances in total hip replacement have occurred since the prosthesis was first developed by Charnley in the 1960s. Yet substantial concerns currently exist over newer hip implants as a result of rising revision rates and increased risk of cancer. By the 1980s revision rates of total hip replacements were as low as 20% after 15 years of follow-up. Throughout this era, the main focus was re...
متن کاملMetal Ion Concentrations in Body Fluids after Implantation of Hip Replacements with Metal-on-Metal Bearing – Systematic Review of Clinical and Epidemiological Studies
INTRODUCTION The use of metal-on-metal (MoM) total hip arthroplasty (THA) increased in the last decades. A release of metal products (i.e. particles, ions, metallo-organic compounds) in these implants may cause local and/or systemic adverse reactions. Metal ion concentrations in body fluids are surrogate measures of metal exposure. OBJECTIVE To systematically summarize and critically appraise...
